Naturopathic Doctors: Why You Should See One

Naturopathic doctors are highly trained healthcare providers who are just waiting to make your life easier by taking care of your health. We’re experienced in deciphering all of those wacky things about herbs and supplements you read online (don’t lie, you know you do this!), watch on Dr. Oz (yes, you know you do this too!), hear about through a friend (everyone has got this friend), or find in a health-food store (why are these stores so confusing?).

No one should be left to their own devices when it comes to health – it’s the most important factor to our overall wellness, and the one thing that can make or break our life’s happiness! Naturopathic doctors have the specific expertise in all of those things you’ve seen in a health-food store and in a grocery store, and will make sure you know exactly what can benefit you the most.

Although patients come to see me to treat various conditions, I do see trends in WHY they chose to see an ND. If you’re thinking about seeing a naturopathic doctor or wondering why a person might decide to pursue this field, here are some of the top reasons to consider.

1. You Are Not Feeling Better
You or your doctor may have already found some great treatments to address your symptoms, but they may not be doing the trick. Or maybe they’re getting you 70% better, but you want to get 100% better (and you should!). This is one of the most common reasons people come to see me and one of the most rewarding aspects of my job, because I LOVE getting people back to their awesome selves!

2. You Have Not Gotten Enough Answers
So many times I hear this: “No one knows what’s going on with me” or “I’m so frustrated because my tests are all normal, but I still feel like crap” or “They say I have _____, but I want to know WHY”. Does this sound like you or someone you know? If so, please find an ND …STAT! Naturopathic medicine may offer a fresh perspective to your case, whether it’s an explanation for your symptoms, an idea about what the root cause is, or a safe and effective treatment you haven’t tried. Either way, find an ND ...ASAP!

3. You Need More Time
Many patients come to see me because I spend quite a bit of time getting to know them and their particular health needs. A typical initial visit is 60-75 minutes long and follow-up appointments are 30-60 minutes long. This length of time allows me to delve more fully into your case including doing a physical examination and generating an individualized treatment plan, and allows you to feel better taken care of. Some things just don’t fit into the 15 minute window most medical doctors can spend with you, and often your unique and complex health issues simply cannot be.

4. Medications Aren’t Your Thing
Not everyone reacts well to pharmaceutical drugs, and others may not be comfortable with some of the side effects they carry. Don’t get me wrong, medications are absolutely necessary in some cases and they do work wonders when fast-acting and/or aggressive therapy is needed. Often, what I find in practice is that naturopathic treatments like nutrients, herbs, acupuncture, diet, and lifestyle changes can provide such significant relief from symptoms that patients will need medications less. Your naturopathic doctor will work together with your current healthcare team (medical doctors, nurse practitioners, etc) to ensure that your safety is placed first!

**Note that an ND will not make you stop your medications (this is a common myth), and you do not have to choose between medications and naturopathic treatments (another common myth). All naturopathic doctors are trained to understand how to cross-reference your medications with any natural interventions they may prescribe, so that this is being done safely and avoiding negative drug interactions.
