Energy & Productivity Woes? Could Vitamin B12 Injections Be The Answer?

A tiny nutrient with a BIG list of jobs, that’s vitamin B12. Would you believe it when I say that of all of the tools I use as a naturopathic doctor, this itty bitty nutrient is one of my biggest powerhouses? It really is! What I love about using vitamin B12 injections in practice is that it provides an immediate improvement in most people, and checks off my two most important criteria: safe and effective.

But before you book yourself in for the 5 minute appointment required to deliver this therapy, read on to learn exactly what the intervention is, and why it’s as valuable as it is.

Vitamin B12 Helps to Build Red Blood Cells.
When we think about our red blood cells, all of the attention tends to go to Iron. Vitamin B12 is Iron’s less known side-kick, but is equally important (think Robin, of Batman and Robin. Batman gets all the glory, but where would he be without Robin’s voice of reason and emotional stability? Are you with me?). Back to B12. As a builder of red blood cells, B12 helps to ensure you have the oxygen and nutrients that these cells provide, which means that on a cellular level, your body is stacked with necessary building blocks to function optimally.

It Helps to Produce DNA.
That’s right. This nutrient helps to form our DNA, which we are in constant need for as we create new healthy cells (whether that’s brain cells, gut cells or liver cells) and avoid creating non-healthy cells (ex: cancer cells). Having adequate vitamin B12 protects you from the effects of DNA damage, which can stave off early aging and improve risk of cancer.

It Supports Thyroid and Adrenal Function.
Vitamin B12 is a key co-factor in several of the chemical reactions related to optimal function of the adrenal and thyroid glands. If you are one of my dear patients (or any of my friends or loved ones), you know how much I chatter on about the critical role of the adrenals and thyroid on health and performance. For everyone else, in a nutshell, these two organs dictate our body’s ability to handle stress and regulate our metabolism respectively, and can be fine-tuned using vitamin B12 to kick-start energy and productivity.

Some Medications Deplete It.
Several common medications can deplete vitamin B12, and in these cases B12 is required to prevent deficiency symptoms. Common medications include Metformin, the anti-inflammatory medications Prednisone and Hydrocortisone, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) used for heartburn, some antibiotics, and alcohol (when used regularly).

Be Diligent with Vegetarian and Vegan Diets.
Since Vitamin B12 is found in animal sources, vegan diets are completely devoid of this nutrient and vegetarians are typically deficient as well. If you adopt a vegetarian or vegan diet, please be sure to book an appointment for an assessment and recommendation for B12. You will likely need a combination of oral and injection dosing. Given the many roles that B12 plays in the body, it is a critical nutrient to supplement if you have a diet that restricts animal products.

Energy and Productivity Boosting.
I know what you’re thinking, “sign me up!” Almost everyone I see in practice could stand to feel better in terms of their energy and productivity. We are an overtaxed and mentally strained society, with tons of things on the go, both positive and negative. All of the items on our to-do list, our constant stream of emails and messages, and the notifications from our social media apps cause us to be pulled in a million directions and this drains our energy in a serious way. Vitamin B12 injections are a safe and effective way to increase your energy, focus, concentration and overall productivity.

B12 for Anxiety and Immune Support too.

Beyond the top 2 reasons for using B12, energy and productivity, I use these injections for a list of other conditions as well. In no particular order, here are the other ways we use B12 injections:

  • Brain fog
  • Memory loss
  • Poor concentration
  • Low mood
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic pain
  • Acute pain
  • Poor immune function
  • IBS
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Celiac disease
  • Inflammation
  • Nerve related pain or injury
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Shingles

The list of impact seems never-ending when it comes to B12. (Now do you see why I love it so much?)
