10 SIMPLE WAYS TO BOOST YOUR MORNING ENERGY

Almost every patient that comes to see me in my practice complains about the same thing – being exhausted! Life and all of its complications can certainly take a toll on our energy, and having low energy doesn’t do us any favours when we’re trying to improve our health.

Sometimes low energy, or fatigue, can be related to deep-rooted and complex health conditions, but often you’ll find huge improvements with some very simple strategies. Here are ten ways I’d suggest to boost your morning energy, especially for those not-so-morning people.

1. Get a Good Night’s Rest
Start your morning off by getting a good night’s rest. If you wake up feeling invigorated and refreshed, this mood will set the pace for the rest of your day. Try to stay away from electronic devices an hour before you want to settle down, take this hour to prep yourself for the next day mentally, meditate, and perform some stretches.

2. Plan your Outfit
Instead of rushing to put together an outfit in the morning, try laying out your outfit the night before. This saves you time and mental effort. Our choice in clothes can impact our emotional state – if you look good, you’ll feel good!

3. Don’t Snooze
Resist the urge to hit that oh-so-tempting snooze button more than once. You are more likely to be groggy in the morning if you’ve been delaying the waking period by hitting snooze. Instead, try to schedule your alarm clock later so you maximize your sleep and have less time to play with that snooze button.

4. Drink a Full Glass of Water before Getting Out Of Bed
Not only does this help stimulate a morning bowel movement, it gets your body prepped for a hydrated day. Most people do not drink enough water daily, and it can be such a simple and effective way to improve your energy, mood, mental clarity, and overall well-being. Trust me on this one!

5. Set an Intention for Your Day
Ask yourself how you’d like to feel for the rest of the day, and make an intention to help guide your day. For example, would you like to feel happy? Loved? Productive? Confident? Starting the day with a guiding thought will help you get rid of the clutter in your day, and focus on the things that really serve your overall purpose.

6. Pay Attention to Sounds

Be mindful of the sounds that start your morning – what are you listening to? Is the radio always on or do you have silence in the morning. Try changing up the sounds that you get ready to in the morning and observe your emotional state.

7. Eat Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and can positively impact your energy level, blood sugar level, weight and your ability to focus and be productive. Make a breakfast that is high in protein and fiber to your morning.

8. Switch Coffee for Green Tea
While coffee gives us a whole-body-buzz, green tea helps create mental alertness and wakefulness. You’ll feel more mentally stimulated and ready to tackle the day! Save your coffee for a mid-morning or mid-afternoon boost, or if you’re really feeling up for it, ditch it altogether. *Caution: not for the faint of heart!

9. Get Moving
Even if you don’t have time or the interest to be active in the morning, a 5-10 minute burst in activity helps get the blood circulating. Try doing a quick circuit of high-intensity-interval-training (HIIT), like running on the spot, jumping jacks, push ups, etc. You’ll feel rejuvenated afterwards!

10. Avoid Social Media and Work Emails
Try to avoid social media and work emails until you have completed your morning routine. It is easy to lose track of time causing you to skip your breakfast and rush getting dressed when you’ve been catching up on Instagram. Avoid those work emails as well! Checking work emails but not having enough time to respond and then rushing to get to work can negatively impact your mood – making you feel rushed and irritated.

These 10 tips to boost your morning energy can leave you feeling refreshed, calmer, and ready for a positive and productive day!
